Bhubaneswar, Sept. 8: Had Sachin Tendulkar not followed his passion for cricket and become an engineer or a businessman, perhaps he wouldn’t have been the icon he is today. Shah Rukh Khan would not have been Bollywood’s reigning superstar if he had chosen to do something other than acting.

Choosing the right career is important and the two-day career exhibition organised by the Regional Institute of Education that began at DAV Public School (Chandrasekharpur) this morning, aims at guiding students to choose a career according to their interest, aptitude and capabilities. The exhibition is open to students from Class VIII to XII.

A total of 15 trainees of the international diploma in guidance and counselling (IDGC) course from Orissa, Bihar, Bengal and Jharkhand, who aspire to become career counsellors, conducted the exhibition. Each of them had to present two career options before the students with the help of posters.

“Our main purpose is to expose 30 emerging career options to students so that they are able to decide what they really want to become instead of following the craze for engineering and medical courses,” said Bala Dkhar, course co-coordinator of IDGC.

Apart from participants of the host school, several students and teachers from the DAV schools at Pokhariput and Kalinga Nagar also attended the fair.

“I wanted to become a doctor but now I am thinking of doing a course in event management. Here one can use their creative skills and act independently instead of following the boss’s orders,” said Pooja Mishra, a Class X student visiting the exhibition.

One of the IDGC trainees, Rupa Pillai, said: “Fashion designing has always been a passion for both boys and girls. But boys are normally shy about discussing it. These career exhibitions help students to shed their inhibitions and talk about their dreams and aspirations.”

Other careers options on display were social work, naval architecture, environmental science, nano technology, bio medical engineering, marine engineering, banking, hotel management, architecture, law, history, special educator, automobile engineering, Indian Air Force, Indian Navy, journalism, agriculture, medicine, retail management, foreign languages, travel and tourism, ceramic technology, military, commercial fine arts and architectural engineering.
