Cuttack: Police swung into action on a case of child torture on Wednesday and arrested a woman after a video of the misdeed went viral in local TV channels and an NGO lodged a complaint over the issue.
The Child Welfare Committee (CWC), Cuttack, rescued the girl, 4, along with Childline (NGO) from a house at Sector 11 of Markatnagar around 3pm on Tuesday.
Childline co-ordinator Narayan Shukla later lodged a complaint at the local police station alleging cruelty on the girl by the woman.
"The FIR against the woman - Pranati Raul - was supported by evidence in the form of clip of her torturing the child by hitting her with a broomstick," said CDA Phase II police station inspector-in-charge Dilip Kumar Swain .
"The complaint was also supported by statement of the victim girl who said that the accused woman used to beat her up regularly," Swain said.
"The court of the sub-divisional judicial magistrate (SDJM), Cuttack, rejected Raul's bail plea and remanded her in 14 days' judicial custody," assistant public prosecutor Biswajit Baral said. Raul was sent to Choudwar jail.
The police had booked Raul under Section 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) of the Indian Penal Code and Section 75 (cruelty to child) of the Juvenile Justice (Care & Protection of Children) Act, 2015.
Punishment on conviction under Section 75 of the Juvenile Justice Act includes three years' imprisonment along with a fine of Rs 1 lakh.
"The girl's parents - who live in Delhi - have been asked to appear before the CWC," said its Cuttack unit chairman Bikash Mohapatra.
