Bhubaneswar, Dec. 19: The state BJP today imposed a chakka jam choking traffic in all the urban local body areas of the state except Bhubaneswar to press its demand for the removal of mayor Ananta Narayan Jena for his alleged involvement in a sex scandal. The party also called a 12-hour bandh in the city on Wednesday.
Apart from mayor's resignation, the party is also demanding a fair probe into the mysterious death of the engineering student, who is allegedly the other person seen in the video. The Congress has also echoed the demand.
Bhubaneswar district BJP president Harekrushna Khuntia said: "Trains and emergency services will be excluded from the purview of Wednesday's bandh. We will urge associations representing autorickshaw and bus owners and school and college managements to extend their support to the proposed bandh. We also call upon all banks and business establishments to support the bandh."
Hundreds of BJP workers today hit the streets in the Baripada, Cuttack, Nimapara and Hinjili urban body areas and stopped the movement of traffic to impose the chakka jam.
The party also sought an appointment with chief minister Naveen Patnaik tomorrow to discuss the issue of mayor's alleged involvement in the sex scandal. BJP general secretary Dillip Mallik said: "We have planned a delegation under the leadership of state party vice-president Samir Mohanty to meet the chief minister and brief him on the case. During the meeting, we will place more evidence related to the mayor's involvement in the scandal and also his alleged involvement in the death of the student. We are waiting for a confirmation from the chief minister's office."
Police today interrogated Subham, one of the student's friends, in connection with his death. During the interrogation, the police wanted to know who were with him on the night before his death and whether he had taken drugs that day.
"He had taken drugs that day. That may be one of the reasons for his death," Subham said after recording his statement at the police station. He said he supported the re-opening of student's case.
Sources said the police was also looking into some Facebook posts of the engineering student in which he had said he hated two people - one of them an influential person and the other a woman.
The BJD said it was waiting for an inquiry report in the case. Party spokesperson Surya Narayan Patro said: "The high command is looking into the issue. If anyone is found guilty, action will be taken against him. The BJP's call for a Bhubaneswar bandh will have no impact."
Sources said the chief minister's office was waiting for the police report and also an intelligence report before taking action against the mayor, who has already approached the court on this issue.
