Kendrapara: Three weeks after his suspension from the BJD, MP Baijayant 'Jay' Panda on Thursday unveiled a multi-purpose auditorium near the district headquarters township.
Panda marched to the venue with his supporters following him in a motorcycle rally. In his brief speech, he refrained from attacking the functioning of the chief minister's office.
"I am thankful of the peoples' support. I am happy that no disturbance has occurred in today's meeting as it has been the case in the recent past. The multi-purpose auditorium will be of use for the people in Kendrapara. As an MP, development of Kendrapara stays on the top of my agenda," he said.
Security had been stepped up in the township to thwart possible disturbances from BJD workers.
"Adequate police arrangement had been made right from the helipad where the MP landed to the venue. No untoward incident occurred during the course of the MP's visit," said sub-divisional police officer Rajib Lochan Panda.
"Panda is trying to galvanise public support and sympathy in the wake of disciplinary action on him. However, the BJD popular base here is still intact," said a senior BJD leader of the Kendrapara Municipality, who did not want to be named.
On January 26, Panda visited the constituency to demonstrate his strength in the area.
