Rourkela, March 1: A delegation of the Airports Authority of India (AAI) today inspected the airport, owned by the Rourkela Steel Plant here, to assess its condition and the kind of aircraft could land here.

The four-member team, led by Narinder Makhija, also interacted with the steel plant officials.

A senior company official said: "They have asked for all the documents regarding availability of land and maps of the area."

Subha Pattnaik, president of the Rourkela Chamber of Commerce, said: "The team had expressed its satisfaction over the condition of the airport. With little upgrade of the airport, the 50-seater ATR can easily land. And this can happen even before completion of modernisation and upgrade of Jharsuguda airport."

Makhija said: "It all depends on the land available with the Rourkela Steel Plant and how much they can provide us for the approach way to the runway. Once we receive all the necessary documents, we will be in a position to say something."

Makhija said: "The team made initial visual study, which is called physical ground condition study. Then the obstacle limitation study will be carried out. And finally, we will submit the survey report with further study to the ministry."
