9 held for gambling

Police busted a gambling racket at Jagatpur truck terminal with the arrest of nine persons on Tuesday. The cops also recovered playing cards and Rs 71,600 in stake money.

Cuttack: Police busted a gambling racket at Jagatpur truck terminal with the arrest of nine persons on Tuesday. The cops also recovered playing cards and Rs 71,600 in stake money.

The police said raids near the truck terminal had revealed that a group of local criminals were regularly organising betting and gambling activities.

The raids followed a tip off that that they were gambling in the area and regularly cheating truck drivers and daily labourers.

Following the tip-off, a team from Jagatpur police station raided the terminal around 9pm on Tuesday and arrested the nine persons. The arrested accused are Ajay Kumar Jena, 52, of Nankar, Akhila Nanda, 46, of Immamnagar, Jageswar Rao, 43, of Sikharpur, Nabin Mallick, 52, of Palei, Nilu Prasad Singh, 48, of Kesharaipur, Subash Chandra Swain, 50, of Balichandrapur, Sarat Chandra Samal, 60, of Palei, Gopal Chandra Behura, 44, of Purna Matha and Mahendra Kumar Sethy, 35, of Sindhupur.

Cases against them were registered against them at the Jagatpur police station under the Indian Penal Code, Prize Cheats & Money Circulation Schemes (Banning) Act and Orissa Prevention of Gambling Act.

The cops seized three packs of playing cards and eight mobile phones and four motorcycles.

“Investigation is in progress to ascertain the antecedents of the persons arrested and involvement of others in the racket,” the police said.
