Bhubaneswar, April 2: About 45,000 students from the state appeared today for the Joint Entrance Examination (Main) examination conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE).

The examination was conducted at 82 centres in six cities - Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Balasore, Sambalpur, Rourkela and Berhampur - amid tight security with no major untoward incidents.

The CBSE conducts JEE (Main), an all-India level engineering entrance examination, for admission into the IITs (Indian Institute of Technology), NITs (National Institute of Technology), IIITs (Indian Institute of Information Technology), deemed universities and other Centrally Funded Technical Institutes (CFTI).

The test paper had 90 questions for 360 marks. There were 3 parts in the question paper - physics, chemistry and mathematics.

There was mixed reactions among the students. A number of students found the paper lengthy.

"Chemistry was easy but the mathematics paper was very tough. I attempted selective questions to avoid negative marking," said Monalisa Mohapatra, a student who attempted for the exam.

Sandeep Sahoo, another student, too found the mathematics paper lengthy and tricky. "The questions for physics and chemistry were straightforward. But mathematics was loaded with questions that required lengthy calculations and that took a lot of time," Sahoo said.

Till 2013, admissions into engineering and architecture colleges in the state were conducted through Odisha Joint Entrance Examination.

There is also an option of taking the exam online, which will be held on April 8 and 9.

The JEE (Main) examination will be followed by the JEE (Advanced) examination that will be held on May 21.

"Only the candidates who get good scores in JEE (Main) will be allowed to appear for JEE (Advanced) and there would be no weightage for Class-XII marks in calculating the ranks in the JEE (Main)," said chairman of Odisha Joint Entrance Examination Tushar Kant Nath.

The result of JEE (Main) is expected to be declared on April 27. About 10.2 lakh students appeared for the JEE (Main) examination across the country today.
