Guwahati: Singer Zubeen Garg has appealed to the people of the state to come forward to ensure safety of women and put an end to crimes against women.
He made the appeal during a stage performance in lower Assam's Bongaigaon town on Monday night.
"Nowadays, everybody is familiar with social media which has become a good platform to raise one's voice. So everyone should raise their voice against such heinous crimes (crimes against women) through social media," Zubeen said just before singing one of his popular numbers, Kaar Parax, Kaar Uxah Aru Kaar Hubax, a song against crime.
Zubeen said all accused involved in crimes against women should be hanged. "If I were in politics, I would have worked towards taking such a step," Zubeen said.
Assam has seen a spate in crime against women and children over the past couple of months prompting the state government to seek the help of the judiciary for fast track trial and punishment to culprits. A political debate has also started with women legislators demanding immediate attention of the government towards such crimes.
Actress Barsha Rani Bishaya also gave a clarion call to parents to be aware of their children's activities. Barsha made the appeal while taking part in a Bihu programme in lower Assam's Rangiya town on Tuesday.
"Parents should know what their children are doing outside at midnight. Indiscipline of youths has become a menace in the state. The number of crimes involving youths has increased manifold. This problem can only be solved when parents will be careful about their children," Barsha said.
Raising concern over incidents of crime involving youths even during Rongali Bihu celebrations when Assamese youth are supposed to be busy with cultural activities, Barsha, who is also a noted Bihu dancer, said: "If crimes take place during Bihu, then there will be no meaning of celebrating Rongali. It is time to teach the new generation what Bihu is, what our culture is and who is an Assamese."
The artistes' fraternity also staged a protest recently after a series of incidents of crimes against women were reported. In Guwahati, hundreds of artistes from the film industry took out a protest march last month seeking justice for victims of such crimes.
