May 24: What is common to Page 3, Bold and the Beautiful, Nupoor and Sur Sangam?

Before someone thinks that these are just the names of Bollywood movies or popular TV soap operas, it is necessary to clarify that all these are titles of some of the competitions lined up for Techno-Quest ’05 ? a two-day technical meet for students, starting on Monday. All for jazzing up the lives of young techies.

According to the organisers, the meet “will be a splendid platform for trendy and enthusiastic youths coming from various fields of professional studies” to showcase their skills.

Students from various institutions, including Gauhati University’s MBA, biotechnology and computer science departments, Assam Engineering College and Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Guwahati, have confirmed their participation in the carnival.

The Central IT College ? a city-based information and technology college ? is organising the meet at the District Library with the aim of providing students pursuing professional courses a common platform for exhibiting their knowledge, skills and abilities in both academic and extra-curricular fields.

Amit Choudhury, head of the management department of the institute, said the meet will provide students an opportunity to “interact and exchange views through fun-filled and knowledge-based competitions and seminars”.

Eleven events would be held during the two-day extravaganza, which will blast off with a technical quiz contest titled Knowledge Scan. This will be followed by Page 3, an instantaneous news presentation competition, wherein participants will observe events within the auditorium for a couple of hours and then present a report at their allotted time.

Wisdom Burst is a paper presentation competition that will test the communication skills of students in their respective areas of study.

The concluding day’s events would kickstart with Fuzzy Logic, a computer programming test for budding software professionals, and Ticking Talent, a one-minute show. It will be followed by Bold and the Beautiful, a personality contest, where participants will present themselves in traditional costumes and showcase their personality.

Apart from the serious technical stuff, there will also be several cultural programmes, dance and music competitions like Nupoor, a solo dance competition (Sur Sangam) and a solo song competition.

The two-day programme will also include a national-level seminar on Globalisation and India: Are We Geared Up To Meet New Challenges? Partha S. Ghosh, director of Indian Council of Social Science and Research, New Delhi, will chair the seminar.
