April 9: An exclusive section housing books and publications by the United Nations was opened at the library of Don Bosco, Panbazar, today, making it the first school in the state to have such a facility.

“We believe that Don Bosco School is a place where tomorrow’s leaders are born, and scores of alumni bear testimony to this fact, having carved out a niche for themselves in various fields. We want to create a UN knowledge hub here for these future leaders. I hope there will be a sustained engagement with your school and (we will) stay connected,” Kiran Mehra-Kerpelman, director, United Nations Information Centre for India and Bhutan, said while inaugurating the library in the school today.

The section houses prestigious UN publications.

“We are indeed honoured that the United Nations chose our school to have a section where their publications will be displayed. It’s a great opportunity for our students to read these world-class books and gather information,” said Fr Antony Thekkel, principal of the school.

On Saturday, a UN reading library was opened at District Library, Ambari, while a section was inaugurated at the Administrative Staff College, Khanapara.

Last year, a UN section was inaugurated at the K.K. Handiqui Library at Gauhati University.

“The UN has taken the initiative to spread knowledge and information about the United Nations and its organisations like Unicef, Unesco, World Bank and International Labour Organisation. Readers will obtain access to these exclusive books and documents that are not available in libraries,” Ashwini Sarma, executive director of UN Resource Centre, Northeast India, told this correspondent.

Partha Pratim Sarma, librarian of Don Bosco School, said: “The students of Don Bosco School will benefit from the rich collection of books and periodicals from the UN publications, which will serve as a storehouse of information.”

“We are delighted to have a UN section of books in our school library. These rare world-class collections will encourage bibliophiles to gather more knowledge,” Arunabha Baruah, a Class XI student of the school, said.
