Guwahati, May 7: Four days after a drug racket was busted in Latasil here, city police seized 20kg ganja from a house in Sarabhati here today.
Two women, Munni Devi and Sunni Devi, both around 45 years old, were arrested in connection with the seizure.
On Tuesday, police had conducted a raid in a house on S.K. Bhuyan Road and seized 14gm heroin, 17gm brown sugar, around 2.5kg ganja and Rs 1.47 lakh in cash and arrested five persons.
"During interrogation of the accused, the police unearthed a huge drug network spread throughout the city. Based on the information, several raids have been made," said a source in the crime branch, Guwahati police.
The same day, police arrested two other persons in connection with the Latasil haul from Chandmari and Maligaon. The police had conducted raids subsequently and made several successful seizures. A police constable, Kasim Ali, was allegedly found linked with the drug racket. City police commissioner Mukesh Agrawal started an inquiry regarding Ali's involvement.
"Sarabhati is a known area for ganja trade but we did not know exactly where to raid. Today, we found the location and carried out the raid. They hid the ganja in a hidden underground compartment in their kitchen," police said.
Director-general of police Mukesh Sahay said, "We are doing everything to curb the drug menace. We are trying to check all the channels through which drugs enter Assam. But psychotropic substance abuse seems to be a greater problem than narcotic drugs in our state. To address the issue, awareness and sensitivity has to be created rather than enforcing the law."
On the other hand, railway police today apprehended a railway employee, Nripen Das, 40, from Kamakhya railway station at Maligaon along with psychotropic substances - 185 tablets of nitro-swim and nine bottles of cough syrup.
Chief minister Tarun Gogoi today said he would form a task force by involving stakeholders from health, education and police departments to check the menace of drug abuse. "It is becoming a big problem. There is a big racket. We have to take it seriously because other states like Nagaland and Manipur are also affected," he said when asked what steps he would take to implement the Supreme Court directive on increasing the size of pictorial warning on tobacco products.
"I have asked my officers to take whatever step is required. Even drug abuse is a big menace. We have to save our future generation," Gogoi said while lauding the apex court ruling.
Gogoi had on Tuesday instructed chief secretary V.K. Pipersenia to constitute a task force headed by additional chief secretary (home) to address drug abuse.
