Dhubri, Nov. 13: Two persons died and five others of the same family suffered burn injuries when a fire broke out in the residence of Sumar Ali at Santoshpur village under Chapor police station of Dhubri district yesterday.
A police source said the injured were first shifted to Chapor first referral unit health centre, then to Dhubri civil hospital and then again to Barpeta’s Fakruddin Ali Ahmed Medical College.
From Barpeta, three of the seven injured were shifted to GMCH, where Ali’s sons, Rakibul Islam, 17, and Monowar Hussain, 10, died of their burn injuries, a source added.
Ali’s wife, Sahera Bibi, 30, his other son, Mokmadal Islam, 13, daughter Monowara Begum, 12, two brothers — Jamser Ali, 35, and Sahidul Islam, 18 — are still battling for life at GMCH.
Sources in the village said a kerosene lamp might have accidentally come into contact with diesel and petrol-filled containers near the fence of Ali’s residence.
The villagers keep diesel and petrol in containers to run the pumps required for irrigation.
Ali was fishing in a rivulet while his family members were having dinner around 9pm when the incident occurred. Ali ran to his house and fainted at seeing his family in the flames, said Kayamat Ali, a villager. The villagers tried to douse the fire but the house was gutted.
Officer-in-charge of Chapor police station, Pintu Pathak, said the reason behind the fire was yet to be ascertained.
“Preliminary investigation has revealed that the fire began when a kerosene lamp came into contact with other inflammable substances,” Pathak said.
The villagers alleged that firetenders from Chapor and Bilasipara reached the village late.
