Tea workers protest firing

Golaghat/Guwahati: The 12-hour district and tea garden bandh, called by the Assam Tea Tribes Students' Association's Golaghat unit to protest alleged firing by the owners of Bogidhola tea estate on the workers over provident fund dues, was total and peaceful on Thursday.

Shops, offices, schools and banks remained closed. The protesters blocked roads at Rangajan, Doigrong on NH 39 and Dergaon, Bokakhat, Kohora on NH 37 for hours.

Bogidhola tea estate owners, siblings Sudhir and Samir Roy, were produced in the CJM's court in Golaghat and sent to 14-day judicial custody. The court rejected the bail petition filed on their behalf citing health grounds.

Two FIRs, one by Prakash Bhumij, a worker of the garden, and another by Amir Tanti, whose sister was injured, were filed in Golaghat police station against the Roy brothers. The police have registered a case (No. 805/17) under Sections 307, 326 and 34 of the IPC, read with Section 30 of the Arms Act, 1959.

Agriculture minister Atul Bora, accompanied by Golaghat deputy commissioner Gaurav Bothra, visited the injured at Kushal Konwar civil hospital here. He said the guilty would be punished at any cost and that the government had sanctioned the compensation declared for the injured.

Of the 14 people injured in Wednesday's incident, nine received bullet injuries while the others may have got injured in the chaos.

In Guwahati, the Assam state committee of the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (Citu) moved chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal for immediate payment of compensation to the injured. In a memorandum, it demanded payment of wages and bonus to the tea workers of the state as soon as possible, action against defaulting tea estates and raise in minimum daily wage for tea workers to Rs 350, Citu Assam state committee general secretary Tapan Sarma said.

Hundreds of Citu members staged a demonstration at Dighalipukhuri in Guwahati.
