Jorhat, March 12: The Assam Tea Tribes' Students Association (ATTSA) today staged a protest and submitted a memorandum to the deputy commissioner's office in Dibrugarh today, demanding compensation to the family of Pramila Mura, 6, of Greenwood tea estate who died yesterday afternoon.

The girl who suffered from bronchial asthma died soon after she was administered a syrup by an accredited social health activist (ASHA) in the Goruchora Lower Primary School under Lahowal police station.

Five more children of the same school were admitted to Assam Medical College and Hospital, Dibrugarh, today purportedly because of after effects of the syrup, but they were all found to be suffering from viral fever, a source said.

The ATTSA secretary, Lahowal, Nikunja Khujur, said they had demanded a compensation of Rs 5 lakh to the girl's family and an investigation to ascertain the exact cause of her death.

Joint director, department of health, Dibrugarh, A. Baruah, said the girl could not have died after taking the syrup since she was given it 94 times earlier.

"Pramila was administered a dose as usual yesterday and an hour later she complained that she was feeling unwell. She was sent home. When her condition deteriorated, she was taken to a neighbouring tea garden health unit and was referred to the AMCH after being given an injection. She died on her way to hospital. She often suffered from bronchial asthma and may have suffered an acute attack," he said.
