Itanagar, May 5: The All Arunachal Pradesh Students' Union (AAPSU) hit the streets here today seeking a governor in the state and directors at the North Eastern Regional Institute of Science and Technology (Nerist) and National Institute of Technology (NIT).
The rally commenced from Akashdeep at Ganga Market and culminated at Zero Point where leaders from various student organisations' addressed a large gathering.
AAPSU president Hawa Bagang said the state was functioning without a head or caretaker (governor).
"Arunachal Pradesh is in dire need of a guardian in the form of governor. China is repeatedly claiming parts of the state as its own, there is a boundary problem with Assam, people from Nagaland are encroaching upon land of the state. Yet, we do not have a permanent governor who could at least try to solve these problems."
On the absence of regular directors in the two institutions, Bagang said the union would not tolerate the way the Centre and state have compromised with the educational scenario.
The union's general secretary, Tobom Dai, said, "Students are facing countless problems. Campus management is at its worst."
Both Bagang and Dai said a delegation of the union would soon leave for New Delhi with all these demands.
Girl found dead
The body of a girl was found lying on the road at Naharlagun this morning.
Police said 19-year-old Mollika Barman, who had hearing and speech impairment, was found lifeless on the road by locals around 8 this morning.
The officer in-charge of Naharlagun police station, N. Riba, said the victim's father, Bidu Bhushan Barman, a labourer from Bengal's Cooch Behar district, had lodged a missing complaint at midnight last night. Barman said his daughter had left their kuccha house to use the common bathroom at 10.30pm and had not returned. "Though we do not address missing complaints till it crosses 24 hours, after knowing the girl had hearing and speech problems, we took the matter seriously and sent out a search party," Riba said.
He said her body was handed over to her family after post-mortem and the autopsy report is awaited. "Initial investigation does not suggest foul play as there were no injury marks on her body. But we are not ruling out the possibility of rape and murder. The post-mortem report will give us a clear picture," Riba said.
The victim's family members, however, said they had already got the post-mortem report and there was no sign of foul play. The victim's sister said Mollika's body was taken to Laluk for last rites.
