Guwahati, Aug. 28: The Guwahati Squash Racket Association (GSRA) has accused the government of trying to deprive it from using the squash complex at RG Baruah Sports Complex here by deciding to hand it over to Assam Squash Racket Association.

The GSRA has alleged that the Assam Squash Racket Association has "not been active over the past 10 years".

"The state government had allotted the squash complex in 2016. We have conducted 15 training camps and other activities in the past one year. Actually, the whole scenario of squash changed in one year. Many youths have come forward for training. But now the government has decided to hand over the complex to the Assam Squash Racket Association, which has not been active for the past 10 years," GSRA secretary Dhruba Jyoti Kalita said.

The Sports Authority of Assam had signed an agreement with GSRA, according to which the complex was allowed to be used by the association for a period of six months, starting May 1, 2016, for coaching.

"As that period is over, we have no objection to the government's decision. It is going by the law. But we have proposed to organise an international-level training camp at the complex for 10 days. Dalip Tripathi, who has got the level 2 certificate from World Squash Federation, has promised to train our youths from September 10. But now we don't have the infrastructure to conduct the camp. We request the government to allow us to organise the camp there," Kalita said.

Criticising the government's decision to hand over the complex to Assam Squash Racket Association, Kalita said, "We have no objection to barring us from using the complex. But it should not be handed over to an association that has not been active for 10 years. It will deprive our young talent of training."

The association has also regarded the government's decision as a conspiracy since a ruling party MLA is the president of the state-level organisation. "They are trying to use the complex for their personal benefit. It is a political conspiracy. We feel so because the development took place even after we met sports minister Naba Kumar Doley and appraised him about our work," Kalita added.
