Imphal, Nov. 22: The eight-day Shumang Leela festival kicked off today at Iboyaima Shumang Leela Shanglen in Imphal as a part of the ongoing Manipur Sangai festival.

A large crowd thronged the festival venue on the opening day.

Sanaleipak Nachom Artistes opened the festival with its production, Mera Thaomei. The play is directed by O. Praphulochand.

Chief secretary O. Nabakishore Singh in his message said Shumang Leela, being a composite art form of Manipur, is making immense contribution towards promotion of art and culture in the state.

Shumang Leela is a unique traditional courtyard theatre form of the state. "Today's play was very good. and I will visit again on another day of the festival," said a visitor.

Tomorrow's play, Leichillakee Thaja, is produced by Lamjingba Artistes Association.
