Guwahati, May 21: Shillong Press Club, NE TV, DY 365, Doordarshan (Guwahati), Amar Asom and Dainik Agradoot today marched into the quarter-finals of the Leo Advertising Harendranath Baruah Trophy inter-media seven-a-side football tournament.
The meet is being organised as part of the 1st Airtel North East Media Sports Festival at Nehru Stadium here from today.
In the inaugural match, Shillong Press Club tamed The Assam Tribune 6-0, while in another match in the second turf, NE TV prevailed over The Sentinel 3-0.
The Shillongites dominated the match and the Tribune men never got an opportunity to effect a comeback.
The visitors pumped in four goals in quick succession in the first half and ruffled the net twice in the second.
In the second game, the agile NE TV men pumped in all the three goals in the first half. The Sentinel tried to stage a comeback in the second half but were ably tackled by their opponents.
DY 365 posted a 2-1 win over Dainik Batori while Doordarshan edged past Janambhumi by 1-0 goals.
DY 365 were leading 2-0 in the first half but the Dainik Batori men regrouped in the second half and managed to reduce the margin by a goal.
In the other two matches, Amar Asom edged past Dainik Janasadharan by a solitary goal in a contesting affair and Dainik Agradoot blanked out Asomiya Khabar 3-0.
The Agradoot team netted all the three goals in the first half, when the Khabar men were yet to gain a foothold in the match.
Defending champions Photo Journalists and last edition’s runners-up Asomiya Pratidin will join the six teams in the quarter-finals tomorrow.
The semi-finals will be played on Saturday and the final on Sunday.
The two-day inter-media chess tournament will start from 10am tomorrow. About 20 players from the region have filed entries.
There will be table tennis events for both men and women on May 25 and a badminton tournament for both men and women on May 26 which will be followed by inter-media cricket from May 27 to 31.
Director of sports S.G. Baruah inaugurated the football tournament today. Joint director of sports Rajib Prakash Baruah and Airtel executive Tridip Sarma were present.
Both the sports department officials, who have been helping the Assam Sports Journalists Association organise the festival in the Northeast level, hoped it would provide an opportunity to the scribes to ease out from their monotony of work.
