Dibrugarh, May 31: Having positioned itself as Assam?s leading junior college with a consistent record of academic excellence, Salt Brook Academy has just embarked on a new mission ? to help students crack national-level competitive exams.

The Dibrugarh-based institution intends to shortlist a batch of 90 students and provide comprehensive and advanced coaching to help them secure admission to the best engineering and medical colleges of the country.

A test will be conducted to select the 90 students who will be provided special coaching for 90 minutes everyday, apart from regular classes.

This year?s higher secondary (science) topper, Anjanmoni Mudoi, was from Salt Brook. Seujee Goswami (seventh) and Himanshu Kaushik (10th) were the other two students from the institution in the top 10.

Principal Ashwini Dowerah believes the biggest challenge for the institution now is to ensure that its students not only do well at the higher secondary level, but also in entrance examinations. ?We have noticed that there are very few opportunities for our meritorious students once they pass the higher secondary education. They need proper guidance and good course materials. We are planning to provide them with all these things.?

Since its inception in 1995, as many as 17 students from Salt Brook have figured in the top 10 in the higher secondary (science) examinations, the best year being 2004, when the institution bagged the top three positions.

This year, 268 students from the institution sat for the examination, 57 of whom got star marks (75 per cent and above). The pass percentage was 97 with 140 students being placed in the first division and 64 in the second division.

Salt Brook offers cent per cent fee exemption to three meritorious students from economically backward families.

This year?s topper Mudoi was among the three whose education had been financed by the institution.

?We take care of everything, from tuition fees to uniform, for three students. We also consider requests from other students who apply for financial exemption,? Dowerah said.

Spurred by the success of its science students, the academy started arts and commerce classes a year ago with 120 seats each.

There are 279 seats in the science stream.
