Guwahati, Sept. 20: The Railway Protection Force (RPF) is distributing Nirbhaya cards among women passengers in Guwahati railway station to curb growing incidents of crime against women in trains.
The card that contains phone numbers of railway police and other helpline numbers was named Nirbhaya because it was the pseudonym given to the December 2012 Delhi gang-rape victim to hide her actual identity.
"If a woman faces harassment in the train, she can dial the numbers given on the card and lodge her complaint. A team of RPF or Government Railway Police (GRP) would come to her help," inspector Manoj Kumar Das, the officer in-charge of the RPF police station in Guwahati, told The Telegraph.
"The objective behind distributing Nirbhaya cards is to ensure safety of women passengers in trains and on platforms," Das said.
He said the card carries phone numbers of the officers in-charge of all GRP and RPF police stations within the jurisdiction of the Northeast Frontier Railway's (NFR) Lumding division.
In addition to this, the card also contains the phone numbers of the control rooms and helplines of the GRP and RPF.
"We are distributing these cards as part of our three-day awareness drive on passenger security, with special focus on security of women travellers, ahead of the RPF's 59th Raising Day to be celebrated tomorrow," the RPF inspector said.
He added that they have distributed more than 4,000 Nirbhaya cards in Guwahati railway station during the awareness drive, which began on Sunday.
Das said during the drive they also created awareness among train passengers about the Railway Security Helpline 182 - a toll-free number managed by the RPF that receives calls from landlines or mobile phones of all service providers - which was started about a year ago.
"This year (from January 1 till date) we have received 22 complaints on the helpline number 182 in Guwahati and most of these calls were about theft of passengers' belongings like mobile phones, purse, ornaments," he said.
The RPF this year registered 665 cases in Guwahati under the Railway Act for different crimes at railway stations and on running trains such harassment of women, hooliganism, drunken brawl and travelling without ticket.
"So far this year, we have rescued 102 children, including missing, lost and runaway children. We have also rescued five victims of human trafficking," he said.
The RPF this year also seized huge quantities of contraband substances, including ganja, Phensedyl cough syrup, cigarettes of foreign origin, Chinese garments, morphine and ammunition of AK-series rifles and arrested several persons in this connection.
