Leader of the Opposition in Assam Assembly Debabrata Saikia has drawn the attention of the state election commission to an alleged bid by the BJP-led state government to violate the model code of conduct (MCC) for the panchayat polls.

Saikia has shot off a letter to the poll panel on Thursday alleging that the state government is preparing to deposit the second tranche of Rs 2,500 in the bank accounts of beneficiaries of Chah Bagichar Dhan Puraskar scheme before the panchayat elections in violation of the MCC.

“I request you to look into the matter and stop any move by the state government to release the second tranche of funds till the results of the panchayat polls are announced,” Saikia said in his letter addressed to state election commissioner H.N. Bora.

He also sought action against legislators who are launching schemes and distributing various items among people in their respective constituencies violating the MCC.

The state government had launched Chah Bagichar Dhan Puraskar scheme on January 2, 2018, to encourage cashless transactions by tea garden workers.
