Silchar: A team from south Assam's Barak Valley will soon meet chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal in Guwahati to seek fulfillment of its demand for renaming the railway station in Silchar as Bhasha Sahid station.
The team will comprise political leaders and members of the Sammilita Sanskritik Mancha, an umbrella organisation of a number of groups of the Barak Valley.
Mancha members had submitted a memorandum to Assam minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in Guwahati on Thursday.
Karimganj North legislator Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha told The Telegraph on Friday that they apprised Sarma of the historical background of the station, the sacrifice of 11 brave persons and the sentiments associated with the issue.
They urged the government to rename the station to honour the martyrs.
Eleven persons, who were protesting against the government's decision to make Assamese the only official language in Assam, were killed by the police at the railway station on May 19, 1961. The day (May 19) is observed as Bhasha Sahid Divas every year in the valley.
