Punit, Nitish earn titles

Punit Basu and Nitish Das annexed the under-19 and under-17 boys' titles respectively in the South Point School Guwahati Junior Chess Championship, organised by Guwahati Chess Association, that concluded at South Point School Indoor Stadium here yesterday.

Guwahati, Nov. 2: Punit Basu and Nitish Das annexed the under-19 and under-17 boys' titles respectively in the South Point School Guwahati Junior Chess Championship, organised by Guwahati Chess Association, that concluded at South Point School Indoor Stadium here yesterday.

Pallab Bhattacherjee, Madhurya Kalita and Nabajit Boro finished second, third and fourth respectively in the under-17 age group.

Simran Ahmed won the under-17 girls' title in the championship. In the under-15 events, Jamuna Buragohain and Uddipta Kakati lifted the girls' and boys' titles respectively. Maharnav Deka, Debanga Kalita and Pranit Malhotra finished second to fourth in the boys' event.

Bhabishnu P. Bordoloi and Medha Barooah won the under-13 boys' and girls' crowns. Dhritiman Bez, Hengul Jyotigyan and Sakib Alam trailed Bhabishnu. Himashree Deka finished runner-up in the girls' table.

In the under-11 boys' category, Puskar Basak, Rishav Singh, Nihad Islam Hazarika and Rajdeep Mudiar occupied the first four positions while Rishita Sinha, Anoushka Priyom, Anchita Sharma and Anannya Talukdar emerged the top four in the girls' event.

The under-9 tables saw Ashvin Sharma, Navaneel Choudhury, Sajal Saroj Lahkar and Prangovinda P. Kashyap in the boys' top four slots, while Ashlesha Talukdar, Baibhabi Barooah and Lulaksik Mahanta were the top three in the girls' event.

Abhinavan Sharma, Arsh Kedia, Priyangshu Goswami and Mrinmoy Rajkhowa emerged the first four position-holders in under-seven boys' category and Afsheen Afsha Zaman, Ikshita Roy Barman and Oishaki Bhowmick, were the first three in the girls' event.

Dwijomoni Singh won the veteran's title followed by Sankar Sharma and Hiranya Das. Alpana Gogoi Chamuah was adjudged the best woman player.

FIDE rating: Anubrat Barthakur, a trainee of P.C. Borooah Chess Academy here, has become the latest international rated chess player from Assam.
