Nagaon, June 24: Hundreds of people gheraoed Hauraghat police station in Assam's Karbi Anglong district this morning, demanding that the administration hand over a murder accused to them.

Ranjan Das was arrested by Hauraghat police on June 12 in connection with the murder of Humra Teronpi, 33, a Karbi woman, on June 6. She did not return home at Panditghat under Hauraghat police station that day and police recovered her decomposed body from the Jamuna river on June 10.

Das, a neighbour, arrested on the basis of an FIR filed by the woman's family, was produced in the court on June 14 and had been remanded in 10 days' police custody for investigation.

The deputy commissioner of Karbi Anglong, Adil Khan, said Das would be produced in court again on June 24.

A team of Karbi Anglong administration, led by assistant commissioner Jyotimoy Doimary, reached the spot and tried to control the situation. Police lathicharged the protesters and later fired in the air to disperse them.

"Our assistant commissioner assured the villagers that a proper investigation would be done and those found involved in the incident will be punished as per the law of the land," Khan said.

According to Hauraghat police, there was no indication of rape.
