Guwahati: We for Justice, an NGO headed by retired Supreme court judge S.N. Phukan, on Wednesday moved the Meghalaya Human Rights Commission requesting it to probe the alleged human rights violations in the June 1 violence in Shillong.
The NGO submitted a petition to commission chairperson Justice Aftab Hussain Saikia claiming the violence caused damage to communal peace, harmony and solidarity. The NGO requested the commission to initiate an inquiry into the reasons which gave rise to "an unwarranted clash" between two vibrant communities, so that such incidents can be avoided.
Curfew was imposed after violence broke out during a protest by residents demanding shifting of alleged settlers belonging to a particular community following a clash between a bus handyman and a woman of that community on June 1. The incident kept Shillong troubled for more than a week.
"Under the secular structure of the country, we are always aware of the basic fundamental and legal rights guaranteed by our Constitution and on the other hand we must also respect the rights guaranteed to all citizens irrespective of caste, community and religion while exercising our own rights," the petition said.
The NGO was formed to provide legal assistance to the weaker sections and promote justice for all.
Former IAS officer Rohini Kumar Baruah, advocate Binod Kumar Jain, Siddharth Sancheti and Arun Choudhury, a chartered accountant, are some of the members of the NGO.
