The Hindu Yuba Chatra Parishad Assam on Friday asked all Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) supporters to burn the effigy of intellectual Hiren Gohain with mejis during Magh Bihu.

The call came in response to the appeal by the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) and Gohain to the people of Assam to burn copies of CAA with meji as a mark of protest.

The Parishad’s Assam unit president Balen Baishya said, “Pro-CAA supporters will burn Gohain’s effigy with mejis at the village level and in every household.”

Criticising CAA protesters, Baishya said, “There are numerous forces in the anti-CAA protest and each has its own agenda. The protesters are neither united nor organised. Their sole intention is to destabilise the state and spread disturbance.”

He said the anti-CAA movement had lost its objective and the protesters were diverted from their aim. “Moreover, since the subject of implementation of the Act is sub judice, there is no point protesting on the streets,” Baishya said. He also alleged that the Assam Islamic Sahitya Sabha had a hidden agenda to motivate the religious minority to create an Islamic state within the state.

Reacting to the Parishad’s statement, AASU general secretary Lurinjyoti Gogoi said, “That is their (Hindu Yuba Chatra Praishad) attitude. We do not subscribe to such comments.”
