Plea to fix water supply plant in Cachar
Residents of Bagherkona and Murabasti have sought the intervention of the authorities concerned in connection with alleged improper functioning of the Bagherkona water supply plant for the past two to three weeks.
Bagherkona falls under Udharbond Assembly constituency in Cachar district, around 18km from here.
The water supply plant caters to two villages — Bagherkona and Murabasti. There are more than 80 families comprising both the villages.
According to local residents, water is being given only for 20-30 minutes for the past two to three weeks as a result of which a large number of people do not get water.
The residents stressed that the matter be treated on a priority basis and water supply be normalised at the earliest, considering that times are becoming tougher because of the effect of the novel coronavirus disease (Covid-19) and advisories have been issued by the government of washing hands at regular intervals.
As such, adequate water should be available at this hour of crisis, one of the villagers said and sought the authorities’ intervention in this regard.
Further, the residents complained that the water supply plant sanitation committee did not call/have any meeting in the past several years. They alleged that they had brought the issue to the notice of the district administration, PHE department and the gaon panchayat a number of times in the past, but the scenario has remained unchanged.
When contacted, the water supply plant sanitation committee’s secretary, Krishna Prasad Kairi, said, “The motor of the water supply plant used to be run with diesel previously, but now it is being run using electricity. Because of the change, functioning of the plant has been affected to a certain extent.”
Further, he said the number of houses is high in the area for which they are unable to provide water properly. He added that the crisis would be resolved and water supply would be normalised very soon.
