For those who believe that brilliant plays with in-depth sensitivity are produced only by big theatre troupes, Shakuntala Theatre’s Botaah Jetiyaa Dhumuhaa Hoy has managed to break all barriers.
Coming from a lesser-known theatre troupe, the play has been widely applauded and appreciated for its socially-relevant storyline and powerful performances by the three major artistes, Tapan Das, Pradip Nishith and Moitreyee Goswami.
The plays deals with the eternal theme of good versus evil, but the way in which it has been handled lends an element of novelty to the storyline.
Deputy commissioner Raju Chaliha infuriates the local MLA when he orders the demolition of illegal construction in the town market. Senior police officer Arjun, an old friend of Raju, carries out the order. The three friends, Arjun, Raju and Raju’s wife Manasi, meet after a long time. Arjun starts visiting Raju’s house frequently and one day, finding Manasi alone, he confesses his love for her. However, he assures her that he does not intend to pursue his feelings as he has great regard for her husband.
On the other hand, the local MLA, who has strong connections with the politicians of the state, including the chief minister, plans to corner Raju and his entourage, including Arjun. The MLA and his aides succeed in killing Raju’s younger brother and subjects Raju to severe physical assault after which he becomes an invalid. However, he soon recovers from his illness and undertakes a mission to take revenge against his enemies. He kills the MLA and his close aides. At the end he also kills his friend Arjun, because he tries to take advantage of his wife.
Written by Pradip Nishith, a seasoned actor in the mobile theatre arena, the play provides an insight into the essence of human mind. Director Tapan Das deserves kudos for his true-to-life portrayal of the bureaucratic set-up. Moitreyee Goswami, a young talent with rare sensitivity, has come up with a flawless performance.
