Tripura to get more battalions
In a bid to intensify vigil along Tripura’s 856-km porous border with Bangladesh, two additional battalions of the Border Security Force (BSF) will be deployed in the state. The state currently has nine BSF battalions. isiting BSF director-general Ajay Raj Sharma assured Tripura chief minister Manik Sarkar that the BSF authority was fully conscious of the need to provide “foolproof” protection to Tripura’s border with Bangladesh. The BSF is currently modernising its entire force with the induction of latest technology and methods. The Congress central screening committee for selection of candidates for the Mizoram polls was constituted on Thursday with Margaret Alva as its chairman. Mizoram in-charge Salman Khurshid, Mizoram Congress president Lalthan-hawla and legislature party leader Zakhu Hlychho are members of the committee. Assam Rifles will hold its annual commanders’ conference in Shillong from October 16 to 18. The conference will be preceded by a media seminar on October 16 and 17 in which eminent media personalities of the country will deliberate on the issues of synergising efforts of the security forces, media and other agencies in the region. Muslim United Liberation Tiger of Assam (Multa) activist Nurul Haque, who was involved in arms transshipment from Bangladesh to Assam, was arrested from Geelaldah under Cooch Behar district in West Bengal. Haque hailed from Barpeta Road in Lower Assam. The post mortem report of Devi, the year-old elephant which died on Wednesday, will be delivered on Friday. Devi died at the Assam State Zoo after she developed dysentery.A mechanic, Swapan Shil (34), died of a massive heart attack while dancing in front of the image of Durga during the immersion ceremony in the Thakurmura village in West Tripura on Wednesday. Arunachal Pradesh chief minister Gegong Apang has sanctioned an ex gratia of Rs 5 lakh to the family of Border Road Task Force commandant Maj. Alok Mathur who was killed by an armed gang near Sangram in Kurung Kume district on October 7.| |
