Guwahati: The CBI arrested an assistant manager of the North Eastern Regional Agricultural Marketing Corporation (Neramac) in New Delhi on Friday for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 1 lakh.

The accused, Satish Sharma, is posted as assistant manager (marketing and coordination) of Neramac in New Delhi.

Neramac is a central government undertaking under the DoNER ministry with its registered/head office here. It was set up to help farmers/ producers of the Northeast get remunerative prices for their produce.

A CBI source said the investigative agency registered a case early this month under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, based on a complaint which said Neramac had awarded a two-year contract to the complainant's firm in October 2017 for running a restaurant at Dilli Haat in New Delhi.

The complainant closed the restaurant on February 9, 2018 and informed Neramac that owing to losses, he was unable to continue with the said contract.

The assistant manager of Neramac allegedly demanded a bribe of Rs 2 lakh from the complainant for not blacklisting his firm and assured him that a minimum penalty would be levied on his firm because of premature withdrawal, the source said.

"The CBI laid a trap and caught the accused red-handed for demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 1 lakh as advance payment from the complainant. Searches have been conducted at the premises of the accused which led to recovery of incriminating documents," the source said.
