Guwahati, March 25: The Nagaon men’s team and Guwahati boys dominated the first day’s proceedings of the 17th inter-district gymnastics and sports aerobic (artistic and aerobic) championship at the Kanaklata indoor stadium here today.
Dinesh Chetri of Nagaon topped the men’s tally with a gold and two silver medals, while teammate Parashmoni Das claimed a gold and a silver. He conceded the parallel bar gold to Sarupananda Das of Assam Police, who also won a bronze in the pommel horse. From the home contingent, Ranajit Chakrabarty was the only man to claim a bronze (parallel bars).
In the junior girls’ section, the home girls ruled the roost, claiming all the six medals in the vaulting horse and floor exercise events. However, in the sub-junior girls’ section, the Guwahati girls failed to maintain the tempo, while their Sivasagar counterparts claimed four medals — a gold, two silver and a bronze. Seema Basfore of Guwahati won the vaulting horse gold, while Mridusmita Dutta of Sivasagar took the floor exercise gold.
The Guwahati boys, led by Jintu Boro with two gold and a silver, reigned in the sub-junior events. They conceded only a bronze to Sahidul Haque of Sivasagar in vaulting horse.
In the junior boys’ category, home gymnasts Shapun Mahanta and Mithun Kalita claimed gold medals in pommel horse and parallel bars conceding the vaulting horse gold to Trinayan Bora of Sivasagar.
