Mukul to inaugurate N. Garo Hills today

Shillong, July 26: Meghalaya is all set to have four more districts in addition to its existing seven.

Chief minister Mukul Sangma will inaugurate the North Garo Hills district tomorrow, with its headquarters at Resubelpara.

W. Khyllep will be the first deputy commissioner of the district. He was till recently holding the post of director, higher and technical education.

Aditya Goenka will be the district’s superintendent of police. He was the East Garo Hills additional superintendent of police.

The North Garo Hills district has been carved out of the existing East Garo Hills district.

Sangma will also inaugurate the East Jaintia Hills district with Khliehriat as the headquarters on July 31.

Official sources said Abhishek Bhagotia will be the district’s first deputy commissioner, who till now is the additional deputy commissioner of East Khasi Hills.

M.K. Dkhar, who has been holding the post of commandant of 1st Meghalaya Police Battalion at Mawiong, has been appointed as its superintendent of police.

The district has emerged from the present Jaintia Hills district.

Next month, the South West Garo Hills district with headquarters at Ampati and the South West Khasi Hills district with headquarters at Mawkyrwat will also be inaugurated.

For South West Garo Hills, which has been carved out of the existing West Garo Hills district, sources said Ram Singh, who has been holding charge of West Garo Hills additional deputy commissioner, will be the first deputy commissioner.

Nikhil M. Sangma, who has all along been the second-in-command at the 2nd Meghalaya Police Battalion in Goeragre, West Garo Hills, will be the first superintendent of police.

Sources said Aldous Mawlong, incumbent director of the State Institute of Rural Development, will be the deputy commissioner of South West Khasi Hills, while Sylvester Nongtnger, SP (Special Branch-I), will be the superintendent of police in the district.

South West Khasi Hills has been created by separating it from the present West Khasi Hills district.

Earlier this month, Sangma had said more new districts would be created to bring the administration closer to the people.
