Mukul claims opener, twin treat for Pallavi

Guwahati, March 23: Top seed Mukul Boro has picked up from where he had left off last season, winning the season-opening all-Assam ranking table tennis tournament, organised by the Don Bosco Past Pupils’ Association, here.

Another promising paddler, Pallavi Parashar, continued her ascent, winning a double crown at the meet that concluded at the Don Bosco indoor stadium today.

The highpoint of the women’s final was fourth seed Papori Hazarika-Borah of OIL creating a flutter by defeating third seed Mrigakhee Bordoloi of NF Railway who had earlier ousted top seed Jupi Borthakur in the semis.

The Assam Table Tennis Association awarded the winners in all categories 90 points while the losing finalists bagged 60 points. The semi-finalists earned 45 points, the quarterfinalists got 30 and pre-quarterfinalists pocketed 15 points.

Boro defeated Kishalaya Basak 11-9, 11-8, 9-11, 11-9, 8-11, 11-7 in a see-saw battle that lasted over an hour, while Papori Hazarika-Borah came back from behind to beat Bordoloi 14-16, 14-12, 11-8, 11-4, 8-11, 11-9 in the women’s final.

Parashar defeated Pritisha Borthakur of Nagaon 12-10, 11-5, 11-6 for the sub-junior title and outplayed Namami Goswami of Guwahati 11-9, 12-10, 10-12, 11-3, 11-6, 11-6 for the junior crown.

Namrup boy Apratim Gogoi claimed the sub-junior boys’ title, beating Agniman Dutta of Guwahati 11-5, 11-9, 7-11, 11-6, while Chinmoy Sarma of Guwahati defeated Plaban Sonowal of Dibrugarh 11-7, 11-8, 7-11, 11-7, 11-8 for the boys’ junior title. Nirman Baruah of Sivasagar won the cadet boys’ title defeating town-mate Ayan Latif Saikia 7-11, 11-6, 10-12, 11-9, 11-9. Sivasagar girl Karishma Azmi struggled past Kasturi Sarma of Nagaon 11-7, 6-11, 9-11, 12-10, 11-7 for the cadet girls’ crown.

Rahul Sarma of Guwahati was adjudged the most promising player of the meet, which was organised in association with the Assam Table Tennis Association and Guwahati Sports Association. In the veterans’ events, Gobinda Upadhaya and Dipika Jhakoria won the men’s and women’s titles.
