Dibrugarh: AICC general secretary and Assam minder Harish Rawat on Thursday claimed Prime Minister Narendra Modi had proved to be the "biggest liar" in the history of Indian democracy.
Rawat told reporters at Rajiv Bhawan here: "The Narendra Modi government came to power by making myriad promises to the people but it has failed to fulfil them. Modi ji had promised achchhe din (good days) but where is the achchhe din? Petrol and diesel prices are rising daily. When we were in power, the BJP criticised us but what they are doing now to control the prices?"
Rawat also criticised Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal for "doing nothing for the common man".
"We had given special category status to Assam but after the BJP came to power they withdrew it resulting in a financial crisis for the state."
He criticised the "pathetic" condition of the national highways in Assam.
The former Uttarakhand chief minister interacted with tea garden workers of Tinsukia and Dibrugarh during his two-day visit to Upper Assam.
The tea garden belt of Upper Assam was considered the bastion of the Congress. However, in the 2014 Lok Sabha polls, the BJP routed the Congress in its bastion. The Congress top brass is hoping to stem the tide in the 2019 general elections and regain its bastion.
"We hope we will do a good job in 2019 and take revenge for our defeat in 2014. We have not decided any candidate for the polls because the selection process will be carried out by the top brass only in February next year," Rawat said.
On Wednesday evening, during a party meeting at Ganeshbari tea estate, some Congress workers shouted slogans against former minister Paban Singh Ghatowar.
They said they wanted a new face to get the party ticket for Dibrugarh constituency this time.
Rawat said the workers were misguided because they did not come for selection of candidates. "I don't know why they shouted slogans against Ghatowar. May be they are dissatisfied with him," Rawat said.
Sources said many tea garden workers are dissatisfied with Ghatowar because they feel he had done nothing for their development and don't want him to get a ticket for 2019.
