Guwahati, March 17: Be an early bird and take home a memento on the polling day!
The first person to cast the vote on election day will get a memento from the Kamrup (metro) district election office.
"We have introduced a memento to encourage voters to cast their valuable votes on the election day. It will be presented as a token of appreciation to the elector who will cast the first vote," said M. Angamuthu, Kamrup (metro) deputy commissioner and district election officer.
"We have also prepared a video through which we appeal to the voters to discharge their responsibility and cast their valuable vote. The video emphasises how the voters can play an effective role in moulding the future of the state," said Angamuthu.
The district election office has undertaken other activities to raise awareness on the need to vote and encourage better voter turnout during the Assembly polls next month. From sky balloons urging people to exercise their franchise to pasting of specially designed stickers on LPG cylinders to attract the attention of female voters, the office is keeping no stone unturned to increase voter turnout.
One can spot these balloons at the Bhupen Hazarika Xomadhi Khetra in Jalukbari, office of the deputy commissioner and on B. Borooah Road. Posters and hoardings will also be displayed at various public places, schools and colleges. Voter slips as a reminder to vote will be distributed among residents a day ahead of the polls.
The election office has also connected with voters through social media sites like Facebook, Twitter and WhatsApp, urging them to cast their vote. A bulk SMS campaign is also being launched. Three videos on voter awareness are also being telecast in various cinema halls.
