Shillong, Oct. 5: Meghalaya governor V. Shanmuganathan today asked nursing professionals to offer quality service to people and termed them "gods" as their service "touches everybody's life".

Addressing the inaugural session of a three-day national conference Today's Learners, Tomorrow's Leaders, Transforming Nursing Education at the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS), Mawdiangdiang, about 15km from here, the governor said nurses attend those who are in need and they extend their service with love and care.

"Nursing is an important service. It is important for everybody's life; nurses are considered gods and people remember them for their good service," Shanmuganathan said.

He lauded the College of Nursing, NEIGRIHMS, for bringing people from all parts of the country to share their thoughts and ideas on the topic.

Stating that putting in one's heart and soul to serve others is not easy, the governor urged nurses to give quality service. The director of NEIGRIHMS, A.G. Ahangar, stressed the need to make use of the technology and modernise education among nurses so that they can stay updated and utilise it for delivering the best service.

He also stressed the need to address the concerns of the nurses and treat them equally as they are the most hardworking people.

On the Nursing College, NEIGRIHMS, Ahangar said the college, which started the BSc nursing course in 2006, would also start an MSc programme this year to accommodate graduates from the college. Ahangar said the NEIGRIHMS used to send its staff nurses for further training in different fields they are interested in so that they can learn more and enrich their knowledge.

He said a proposal is being made to grant study leave for staff nurses who want to pursue further studies.

Earlier, in her keynote address, Nursing College, NEIGRIHMS, principal Catherine E. Myrthong stressed the importance of research work for transforming nursing education.

Organised by the college, the conference has participants representing various nursing institutes across the country.

The conference will conclude on Wednesday.
