Kohima, Nov. 7: The Lotha indigenous community of Nagaland celebrated its post-harvest festival — Tokhu Emong — throughout the state today with pomp and gaiety. The main celebration was held at Wokha town, the headquarters of the Lotha-dominated Wokha district.
The state government also organised a road show at Wokha to showcase the programmes of the state government and the Centre for the uplift of the people. The occasion was also marked by cultural programmes across the state.
At Wokha, Nagaland home minister Imkong L. Imchen attended the programme, along with a host of ministers, MLAs and top government officials. He urged the Lothas to preserve their unique tradition and culture and cautioned them against the growing influence of alien cultures on the Naga people. He also called for peace, reconciliation and forgiveness among all Naga tribes.
A concert, Miss and Mr Tokhu Emong contests and cultural shows were also organised to mark the occasion.
The Tokhu Emong festival signifies many cultural activities of the Lotha tribe, such as display of wealth, talent, smartness and politeness and feasting among friends and family members.
Ntsemo Ngullie, chairman of Lotha Hoho, said during this period friends from other villages also visit with gifts to share their happiness with them. “The main purpose of this festival is also to bid farewell to the concluded year and to welcome the coming new year. “In other words, Tokhu Emong signifies a season of rejoicing, feasting, forgiveness, reconciliation, peace and harmony among all sections of people. It is also involves thanksgiving to the Almighty for His blessings,” Ngullie said.
