Guwahati, Aug. 26: Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal and Fifa under-17 World Cup tournament director Javier Ceppi today unveiled the host-city logo and the trophy at Indira Gandhi Athletics Stadium here.
The trophy and the logo will be shifted to Judges Field here, tomorrow, for public viewing.
"I am happy to unveil this trophy. It is a great opportunity coming our way to develop football in this part of the country. I believe, it will be a milestone in our endeavour to make Guwahati the sports capital of the country. I am hopeful the youngsters of the Northeast will draw immense inspiration from the nine matches. The talents of the region will gain a lot by seeing some of the best footballers of the world in action, live, right in front of them," Sonowal said.
"I am grateful to Fifa for complimenting the stadium here as the best in the country and awarding important matches of the historic tournament to this city," he added.
Designed by Nibir Das, during a contest organised by the state government, the logo comprises the Brahmaputra, the one-horned rhino, the Kamakhya temple, a gamosa, a japi with a football, a pepa, and tea leaves. The host-city logo resembles Fifa's official logo.
"Unlike some other venues, where they chose the state concerned as the theme for the logo, Guwahati chose it to represent the city, which is great," Ceppi said. He also appreciated the state government's initiative in giving a fresh look to the Indira Gandhi Athletics Stadium for the mega event.
Prior to the trophy unveiling ceremony, Ceppi had a heated exchange with AFA secretary Ankur Dutta, whom the former accused of allegedly telling the vernacular media here that World Cup matches were being shifted away from the city in view of security concerns. Dutta, however, dismissed the allegation and said there was no development to shift any match.
