Guwahati, Sept. 24: Simoco Telecommunications (South Asia) Ltd, a Calcutta-based company that supplies LED streetlights to municipal corporations across the country, is keen on setting up a manufacturing unit in Assam.
The company, which was selected through a bidding process, has already installed 9,500 LED streetlights here under the Guwahati Municipal Corporation’s Project Jyoti and is planning to replicate the same across the state, Simoco executive director Salil Chaudhuri told The Telegraph
“The response has been good and more than 5,000 applications, seeking such lights, are still pending with the corporation. The business has been good and it will increase as the use of LED lights are being promoted by the government,” Chaudhuri said.
Simoco has a full-fledged manufacturing facility in Salt Lake, Calcutta, and has developed a complete manufacturing and testing set up for innovative LED and solar LED light products.
Chaudhuri said the company would set up a manufacturing facility in Assam if it gets government support. “We are expecting a turnover of Rs 100 crore in the next couple of years from Assam,” he said, adding that the company does not sell in retail.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had launched a scheme, Prakash Path (the path to light), last year. It aims at replacing existing incandescent bulbs with LED bulbs.
LED bulbs last almost 50 times more than ordinary bulbs and 8-10 times more than CFLs, thereby saving energy and cost.
Besides GMC, Simoco has supplied LED lights to Gauhati University, Numaligarh Refinery Limited and Indian Oil Corporation.
The company has an office and a service centre here.
The company is participating in a PWD-organised
exhibition here to create awareness about the implementation of new technologies. The exhibition will conclude tomorrow.
