Guwahati, Nov. 17: Having already tallied 35 scalps from six matches so far in the ongoing season, Assam's in-form pacer Krishna Das is eyeing atleast another five in the remaining two Ranji Trophy group A league matches.
Bowling against Delhi in Ranji Trophy, anyone will want the prized scalp of captain Gautam Gambhir. That is what Assam's Krishna did not miss to mark his 100th wicket in first-class cricket and join the distinguished club as the seventh member from the state yesterday.
Krishna trapped Gambhir leg-before with the third delivery of the very first over that Delhi faced in their second innings against Assam at Barsapara Cricket Stadium here.
He also picked up Unmukt Chand later in the afternoon to have 101 under his belt so far. With the feat, he has become the second fastest from Assam to achieve the mark in only 27 Ranji matches. The late Anup Ghatak hauled 100 in 25 matches.
Apart from Ghatak, Gautam Dutta, Zaved Zaman, Sukhwinder Singh, Arlen Konwar, Abu Nechim Ahmed have tallied 100 wickets with offie Konwar grabbing the most so far with 212 wickets from 69 matches.
Arup Das, who fractured his right thumb facing a Pradeep Sangwan delivery yesterday, is the next in the line for the mark with 97 wickets already in his kitty.
The Assam Cricket Association yesterday felicitated Krishna with a memento after the day's play and hoped he books a berth in the national side with his performance.
Making his debut against Kerala at Dibrugarh in Upper Assam in 2005-06 season, Krishna had a one-year injury layoff following a car crash at his home town Barpeta in lower Assam in October 2006 before he made a real comeback with a seven-wicket haul against Tripura at Nehru Stadium here in 2014. He had tallied 26 in the 2014-15 season.
"It feels great to have achieved the mark taking the wicket of a great batsman like Gambhir in front of the home crowd. However, I am yet to achieve the target I have set myself for the season and I am hopeful of doing so," Krishna said.
Complimenting coach Sanath Kumar for his support throughout his career, the lanky pacer said, "Sanath Sir has always been so supportive to every player that everyone is immensely motivated to perform under him."
Impressed by his bowling as an extra bowler at the nets for the Ranji trials in 2005, Sanath had picked Krishna for the Ranji team when he was just 15 years old.
"It was Sanath Sir and Javed Khan (a coach in his hometown) who were behind my comeback after my injury layoff," Krishna said.
Assam's only IPL figure Abu Nechim Ahmed, whom Krishna took up as role model along with his predecessor Mark Ingty, said: "Krishna is doing very well. I wish he carries on with his good work and achieve new heights."
