Dibrugarh, Sept. 15: The Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) today hit out at the BJP and the RSS for arresting its leader Akhil Gogoi from his residence at Chandmari in Golaghat on Wednesday night.
'We strongly condemn Akhil Gogoi's arrest. It is a big conspiracy by the government as he had been quite vocal against its policies. The government should withdraw the false charges and release him immediately. By indulging in such actions, the government is trying to throttle the voice of the common people. If Akhil is not released, we will launch a collective movement against the government across the state,' KMSS adviser Bedanta Laskar told reporters at the Greater Dibrugarh Press Club today.
Dibrugarh police arrested the KMSS leader for allegedly delivering a provocative and anti-national speech during a public rally at Bamunbari, Moran, in Dibrugarh district on Tuesday. Akhil is said to have made an open appeal to the people to take up arms against the BJP-RSS.
'When APSC chairman Rakesh Paul was arrested, he was kept in an air-conditioned room and our leader Akhil Gogoi was dragged from his residence like a thief. He was brought to Dibrugarh police station and kept in lockup in unhygienic conditions. When the police picked him up him from his residence, he was wearing a vest and lungi and they didn't give him time to dress up properly,'' Lashkar said.
The group came down heavily on chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal and cabinet minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for arresting their leader in an unconstitutional manner.
'Earlier, Sarma collected money for Ulfa and a case was registered in the Tada court against him. But when Akhil Gogoi is fighting for justice, they sent him to jail,'' Lashkar said.
According to the group, from June 29 to July 9, arms training was imparted to Durga Vahini, the women's wing of the Vishva Hindu Parishad at Gita Ashram in Hojai.
'We informed Assam director-general of police Mukesh Sahay about the incident with an FIR and urged him to arrest the people who are providing the training but till date no one has been arrested. Both the BJP and RSS tried to build a new Assam with an ideology of extreme Hinduism by destroying Assamese culture and history,'' a statement said.
Akhil was charged with sedition and attempt to wage war against the government. He was sent to four days' police custody yesterday.
'We appeal to the people of Assam to join us to oust the BJP and RSS from Assam. On Monday, we are organising a protest against the Centre's move to amend the Citizenship Act and non-implementation of the Assam Accord. If Akhil is not released from jail soon, will we intensify our movement,'' it added.
Dibrugarh police have summoned pro-talks Ulfa leader Jiten Dutta, who was also present in the rally, to appear at Moran police station where the case against Akhil is registered, before 10am on Sunday. So far, no charges have been slapped against him.
The police are said to be examining video footage of the rally, besides questioning eyewitnesses to ascertain whether he was also guilty of instigating the public through his speech.
