Nagaon, Oct. 29: The Autonomous State Demand Committee (ASDC) has decided to pull out from cold storage its demand for a separate state comprising Karbi Anglong and North Cachar Hill districts.

Speaking to the media in Diphu today, ASDC general secretary Somang Kro said three more influential organisations from the two districts would join the committee, which will revive the mass movement from next month.

The three organisations are Karbi Student?s Association (KSA), Dimasa Women?s Society (DWS) and Karbi Nimchau Cinthur Asomg (KNCA).

A joint session of all the four organisations will be held in Diphu tomorrow to draw up an action plan for the mass movement. Kro said a delegation would visit New Delhi next month to apprise the Centre of their demands.

Kro accused the Congress-led Tarun Gogoi government for its failure to bring peace and harmony to the troubled region and demanded dissolution of the Congress-led autonomous councils in Karbi Anglong and North Cachar Hills on moral grounds. ?They (council authorities) are just toeing the government?s line and have totally failed to fulfil the aspirations of the indigenous people of the districts.?

The movement for an autonomous state gave birth to the ASDC in the twin hill districts of Assam. The ASDC even ruled the two district councils of Karbi Anglong and North Cachar Hills districts for two successive tenures till the party split in 2001. In fact, after the 1998 amalgamation of two Karbi militant groups, Karbi National Volunteers and Karbi People?s Front, and its subsequent split two years ago led to confusion and the movement for ?self rule? in the districts lost momentum.

The ASDC leader alleged that the Congress had failed to tackle insurgency in the districts. ?The ideology of the militant groups is different from ours. And it is clear to all that only political negotiations on the issue of Hemprek Kanthim (self rule homeland) can bring a permanent solution. But t he Congress, for some mysterious reason, is avoiding the matter,? Kro said.
