Guwahati: Assam badminton prodigy Ashmita Chaliha has been named by the Badminton Association of India to represent India in the Jakarta Asian Games from August 19 to 28.
Ashmita is part of the 20-member Indian badminton squad for the meet. Mallika Barua of Assam was part of the Indian badminton team 32 years back, in 1986.
"It is very good to see three players from Assam being selected to represent the country in Asian Games and other international tournaments," Assam Badminton Association secretary Omar Rashid said on Wednesday.
Ningshi Block Hazarika will partner Kuhoo Garg of Uttarakhand in the women's doubles in the Total BWF World Badminton Championship at Nanjing, China, from July 30. Orijit Chaliha will play in the Badminton Asia Junior Championship at Jakarta from July 14.
On Ashmita's performances, Rashid said, "It is right after Ashmita won a title and made it to the final in another that she was selected to play in six international tournaments. It will be interesting to see if she gets games as leading shuttlers like P.V. Sindhu and Saina Nehwal are in the team."
Ashmita said: "I have worked hard to improve. I am lucky to get the opportunity to play with top-ranked players and to be trained by Indonesian coach Edwin Iriawan."
Rashid said the association has proposed to host the Junior Badminton World Championship here in 2019, if India wins the bid.
