Guwahati, May 14: Landing that dream job has become a reality for Gauhati University students. Infosys, the infotech giant, has selected 42 students for recruitment to various posts in the company.

Vice-chancellor Amarjyoti Choudhury said today that the selections were made after its first ever campus interview was held at the university’s Academic Staff Council office last week. He added that the Infosys team, which conducted the interview, was extremely impressed by the performance of the students and promised to hold more such interviews in future.

The selected students, who are all in their final year, received the appointment letters soon after the interviews were over. Before joining service, the students will undergo a six-month training period at Mysore from September. During the training period, each student will be paid a total stipend of Rs 1.23 lakh.

Kandarpa Sarma, the university’s placement officer, said on completion of their training, the students will be absorbed in various positions of the company in accordance with their skills and aptitude. The students are happy with the lucrative pay packages and the other perks the company has offered, he said.

A three-member Infosys team, headed by A. Jacob, had conducted a tough five-hour-long interview last week. There was a written test and a group discussion before the final interview. As part of the exercise, students had to appear for a voice test and reading skills. Personality and aptitude of the students were given top priority by the recruiters.

After Infosys’s success, students are now waiting for another IT giant, Wipro, which will conduct its first ever campus interview in the last week of this month. Sarma said Wipro had confirmed that it plans to select at least 50 students. He said most students are confident of bagging jobs with Wipro as well. Besides the two IT giants, several other Bangalore-based firms have contacted the university and expressed their interest in recruiting fresh graduates, Sarma said.

A leading customer service firm, Call 24/7, is scheduled to conduct a campus interview next month, he added.

University teachers are extremely happy with the performance of the students. The teachers felt that such campus recruitment would go a long way in projecting a better image of the university.

“The university has been hitting the headlines for all the wrong reasons in recent years. But with students getting jobs in companies like Infosys, it would send the message that all is not wrong with this premier institution,” a teacher said.
