The strains of the pepa and gogona, the beat of the dhol and the kopou blooms have heralded the Rongali Bihu spirit in right earnest. It is time for Bohag Bihu revelry and Bihu sanmilanis in different parts of the city have organised festivities spanning at least three days. The Telegraph guides you around the various Bihu pandals and its main attractions.
- The Pub Guwahati Bihu Sanmilani is celebrating its 42nd Bihu festival at the Assam Engineering Institute field, Chandmari from April 14 to 17. The main attractions of the Bihu festivities here will be sports competitions, recitation, the traditional biyanaam, Bihu huchori, Goalparia songs, dhulia circus, Sattriya dance, pitha-making, puppet dance, modern dance, Odissi dance, jikir, Bihuwati competition, tribal dances and a cultural programme that will feature some of the top names in Assamese music.
- The Guwahati Bihu Sanmilani is celebrating its 52nd Bihu festival at the Latasil playground from April 14 to 17. The main highlight of the Latasil programme will be an elephant procession on the inaugural day. Besides there will be marathon races for both men and women, sports programmes, drawing contests, puppet dance, dhulia, pitha-making contest, dihanaam, Bihu rani, Bihu konwari, Bihu samraggi competitions and a cultural function where, besides dances by various troupes, there will be programmes by Charu Gohin, J.P. Das, Sangita Kakoty and artistes from various states of India.
- The Paschim Guwahati Bihu Sanmilani is celebrating its 49th Bihu festival at the Sonaram High School playground, Bharalumukh, from April 14 to 17. The main attractions of the Bihu festivities at this bihutoli will be a marathon race, sports programmes, Bihu dance competition for children, pitha-making contest, Assamese dress and ornaments competition, jikir, biyanaam, dihanaam, Bihu konwari contest and a cultural function that would feature music maestro Bhupen Hazarika and top singers like Khagen Mahanta, Krishna Moni Nath, Anupam Saikia, Trishna Devi, Kumar Sanjib and others.
- The Dakhin Pub Guwahati Rongali Bihu Sanmilani is celebrating its 36th Bihu festival at its Rajgarh bihutoli premises, Rajgarh, from April 14 to 17. The highlights here will be sports programme, moina chora, drawing contest, quiz contest, go-as-you-like, bor bihuwati, bihu huchori contest, cultural programme by Kumar Bhabesh and other upcoming artistes.
- The Ulubari Rongali Bihu Sanmilani is celebrating its 38th Bihu festival at Ulubari Shiv Mandir campus, Ulubari, from April 14 to 16. The attractions here will be a sports programme, souvenir release, Bihu konwari, Bihu huchori contest and cultural programme by renowned artistes like Khagen Mahanta, Rameshwar Pathak, Samar Hazarika, Monjyotshna Mahanta and others.
- The Pandu Bihu Sanmilani, Maligaon, is celebrating its 42nd Bihu festival at the NF Railway stadium at Maligaon from April 14 to 17. The highlights of the Pandu Bihu festivities will be sport competitions, Bihu konwari contest, release of their souvenir and cultural programmes by renowned artistes like Bhupen Hazarika, Tarali Sarma, Kumar Bhabesh, Charu Gohain and others.
- The Madhya Pandu Rongali Bihu Sanmilani will be celebrating its 15th Bihu festival at the Rest Camp Vidyamandir playground, Pandu, on April 21 and 22. The main attractions will be sports programmes, drawing competitions, Bihu huchori and Bihu konwari contests and cultural functions by local artistes.
- The Madhya Pub Guwahati Bihu Sanmilani is celebrating its silver jubilee Bihu festival at Nabagraha Kali Mandir playground from April 14 to 17. Marathon race, sports programme for children and women, pitha-making contest, Bihu konwari contest and cultural programme by Bhupen Hazarika and other renowned artistes like Shanta Uzir, Krishnamoni Nath, Naren Das, Jitul Sonowal, Tarali Sarma, Prabhat Sarma, Diganta Kalita and others will be part of the festivities at this bihutoli.
- The Noonmati Bihu Sanmilani is celebrating its 40th Bihu festival at the Indian Oil Corporation Limited playground, Noonmati, from April 14 to 17. The main attraction here will be a marathon race, various sports events, souvenir release, borgeet, dihanaam, Bihu huchori, Bihu konwari and other cultural programmes.
- The Rukmininagar Rongali Bihu Sanmilani is celebrating its 20th Bihu festival at the Housing Colony bihutoli from April 14 to 16. The main attractions will be sports programme, swahid tarpan, naam prasanga, song, drama and cultural programmes in the evenings by renowned artistes like Jitul Sonowal, Tarali Sarma, Jaan, Debeswar Saikia and others.
- The Dakshin Madhya Guwahati Rongali Bihu Sanmilani is celebrating its fifth Rongali Bihu festival at the Arya Vidyapith playground from April 14 to 16. The main attraction at this bihutoli will be distribution of fruits, bihuwan and food items to the indoor patients of Dr B. Barooah Cancer Hospital, various sports programmes, drawing competitions, extempore speech, souvenir release, go-as-you-like and cultural programmes every evening.
- The Greater Paltan Bazar Rongali Bihu Sanmilani is celebrating its silver jubilee at the Srimanta Kristi Bikash Samity, Paltan Bazar, from April 14 to 17. The highlights of the programme here includes cultural procession, marathon race, smriti tarpan, souvenir release, sports programme, football match between the elders and the young, go-as-you-like, drawing competition, dihanaam, Bihu huchori competition and cultural programmes.
