“We were informed around 9pm. We had to break open the door of his room and found him hanging. We sent the body to Guwahati Medical College and Hospital for post-mortem and will hand over the body to the IIT,” a police officer told The Telegraph on Saturday afternoon.

He said preliminary investigation pointed to suicide but they were waiting for the post-mortem report. “No suicide note has been found. A probe is on,” the police officer said.

IITG said in a statement: “The institute has informed the parents of the student and they are on their way to Guwahati. We request everyone to respect the privacy of the family at this time of grief.”

A similar case was reported in January 2019 when a fourth-semester BTech student, Pannem Pavan Siddardha from Andhra Pradesh, was found hanging in his hostel room.

Friday’s case was the second student death at the institute this year, sources said.

In January, a PhD student from Odisha was found dead inside his hostel room, which he had not opened for two days. His body was found on his bed.
