Agartala, May 4: The headmaster of a higher secondary school has been absconding since Friday after he beat up a Class IX student for allegedly teasing a girl of his class.

Police said Tapan Paul, a student of of Manikyanagar Higher Secondary School in Sonamura sub-division, had teased his classmate in school last Friday.

The matter was immediately reported to the headmaster.

When classes commenced after the recess, headmaster Chayan Paul entered the class with a cane and started beating Tapan.

The police quoting doctors said, unable to bear the pain or because of the intense heat, Tapan fainted in the classroom.

He was then taken to Boxanagar primary health centre. Sources said because of the poor infrastructure at the health centre, Tapan was shifted to G.B. Hospital in Agartala.

The superintendent of the hospital, D. Kar, said Tapan was being treated for superficial injuries that he sustained in the head and face.

Following her only son’s hospitalisation, Tapan’s widowed mother Nayantara Paul filed a complaint with Boxanagar police station yesterday.

But the police failed to track down the headmaster though neighbours said Paul left his quarters shortly after returning from school on Friday.

Non-cooperation

The Karbi Anglong unit of the Home Guards Association has declared non-cooperation on May 6 in protest against the local administration for its failure to organise departmental training which would have helped the guards secure permanent jobs, says our Nagaon correspondent.
