Violence at May Day rally

Bus drivers and conductors, who took out a May Day procession on Monday, pelted stones on other buses and tried to assault their drivers.

A police official said the participants of the rally turned violent when they saw some of their counterparts at work on Beltola Road instead of joining the procession.

Docs? protest

Junior doctors of Gauhati Medical College Hospital will sport black badges on Tuesday to register their protests against the Centre?s recent decision on stepping up reservation at all educational institutions including IIM and IIT.

Meeting

The All Assam Poultry Owners Association met in the city recently to discuss various problems faced by its members.

Ambulances

The residents of Azara have demanded more ambulances from the health department in view of increasing number of road accidents. They said the one at Azara Primary Health Centre was inadequate to meet the requirement in emergency.

Scribes? meet

The Assam Union of Working Journalists will hold its yearly session at North Gauhati College on May 7. A discussion on the role of media in the changing socio-economic scenario will be held on the occasion.

Action plan

The Assam State AIDS Control Society has submitted an annual action plan to the National AIDS Control Organisation. The plan has stressed on giving more power to district AIDS control units, safe blood and blood products.

Water crisis

Residents of Lachit Nagar, Gandhi Basti and Dakshin Sarania have been forced to purchase water from private suppliers after a water crisis hit the area, reports said.

V-C?s reply

G.N. Talukdar, vice-chancellor of Gauhati University, will give his reply and assurance to concede to the demands of the All Assam Students Union within this week.
