Golaghat, April 20: Assam PWD and urban development minister Ajanta Neog today laid the foundation stone of a modern stadium complex here.

The project, with an estimated cost of around Rs 20 crore, is expected to be complete within two years.

The stadium complex will house two volleyball courts, two boxing rings, a cricket ground, a football ground, a twin-crease indoor cricket practice stadium and a four star guest house-cum-gallery.

Golaghat District Sports Association president Sanjib Handique told The Telegraph that the proposed stadium complex would be unique in the entire Northeast. He said the indoor cricket practice stadium would be built with materials imported from Australia and once this ambitious project was complete, Golaghat would become a place to reckon with as far as sporting facilities are concerned, not only in Assam but in the entire country.

The indoor cricket stadium is likely to be inaugurated in September this year when GDSA will celebrate its diamond jubilee.

Golaghat already has a indoor stadium and swimming pool and after the completion of the proposed project, the town can boast of being one of the most well equipped districts of the state having state-of-the-art sporting facilities.
