Guwahati, May 31: Gionee India is betting high on the Northeast and aims to have 10 per cent market share by year-end.

Established in 2002, Gionee Communication Equipment Co. Ltd is a hi-tech company in mobile device designing, research and development, manufacturing, sales in international markets and mobile Internet application services.

The company today expanded its best-selling Marathon Series by adding M5 Plus, the new power-packed smartphone with a 5020mAh battery capacity and smart power consumption system, in an ultra-slim full metal body.

Gionee sells over 23 million handsets per year worldwide and ranks number 10 in the world by smartphone market share.

The regional director, east, Gionee India, Timir Baran Acharyya, today said the Northeast is high on Gionee's agenda and they would open a few more exclusive service centres. The company focuses on the mid-segment smartphones.

A Morgan Stanley research report says India is expected to overtake the US as the second-largest smartphone market next year with robust annual growth. Citing figures, the report says 1,696 units of smartphones are sold monthly in Assam and rest of the Northeast costing more than Rs 25,000.

Smartphones costing more than Rs 25,000 have a 17.5 per cent market share in smartphones in the country and 2.3 lakh units are sold monthly.

"Customers in the Northeast have liked our products as they are trendy and value for money," Acharyya said.

He said the company's motto with the Marathon series remains the same with each device to make life stress free with no battery issues bothering customers.

"We believe that smartphones are needed to take down your burdens and not add on it. Hence, we design our devices according to the utmost needs of our customers," he added.

The products will be available across retail outlets in the country and through online partner Flipkart.
